Critical Incident Management and Psychological First Aid

What is a Critical Incident?

The International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) describes a Critical Incident as a 'Powerful traumatic event that initiates a crisis response' (Mitchell,2015)

This can be a single, one off event, multiple or repeated incidents, vicarious or secondary trauma.

In the Workplace this may be, assaults on staff, sudden death, suicide of a colleague, a member of the public, customer, serious accident, injury or robbery.

It's important to remember that everybody can be affected by different things at different times of their lives.

I am passionate regarding this area of work. I have witnessed the positive affects Psychological First Aid can have when it's been administrated at the right time, in the right way. Unfortunately I work with many individuals who haven't been able to access this support and are unable to process the Incident. They are left feeling overwhelmed by the physical, psychological and emotional symptoms.

I offer on-site Group Crisis Interventions according to the Incident. These include Crisis Management Briefing (CMB), Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) or Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). Pyscoeducation is an important aspect of the intervention as it can help a group or individual understand how their mind and body will be trying to make sense of an extraordinary event. This is not therapy, it's a practical, pragmatic approach which offers information to all involved.
